Belgian Style Ales

Duvel
(Moortgat brouwerij, Breendonk-Puurs, Belgium)

Golden Ale Style. Pale light golden color with a slight haze and rich head. Sourdough yeast and Brazil nut aromas follow through to a sweet-tart, medium to full-bodied palate with tangy citrus and sweet malt flavors. Finishes with a nice impression of balancing hops. A clean, well-made ale

La Fin Du Monde
(Unibrou Brewery, Chambly, Canada)

Golden Ale Style. Deep gold color and slightly cloudy with a thick, rocky white head. A wonderful, complex nose filled with notes of malt, orchard fruit, wheat bread, citrus and hop oils. Full-bodied and perfectly balanced. How it hides its 9% strength is well beyond understanding. Flawlessly integrated flavors drift from one to another with the greatest of ease. Near Perfection

Abbey Brown Ale
(Corsendonk monasteryj, Oud Turhout, Belgium)

Abbey Dubbel Style. This is an abbey-style Belgian brune from the Corsendonk monastery. Nose is malty, woody and puddingy, with sour hints of lemon and brandy. On the palate it is smooth, with treacley malt very evident along with an alcohol on the roof of the mouth. It is perhaps a little sweeter than other brunes. Aftertaste is quite sour, with lingering treacley malt notes. This strong and sweet ale makes one amazing drink.

Tripel Karmeliet
(Bosteels brouwerij, Buggenhout, Belgium)

Abbey Tripel Style. Brilliant golden-yellow hue. Pours with a rocky white head. Sweetly fruity aromas follow through on a moderately full-bodied palate with a markedly malty and sweet mid-palate that gives way to a long fruity finish. Delicious.

Westvleteren 12
(Rodenbach brouwerij, Roeselare, Belgium)

Trappist Style. Full red-amber. Full-bodied. Pours with a creamy head and shows fruitcake aromas. Very complex, rich and winey. Bucketloads of complex bready flavors with a buckwheat honey-like richness. A hint of hop bitters balances the sweetness through the finish

Strong Ale Style. Deep gold, light copper color. Malt, spicy, and citrusy crossing a wide range of Belgian styles in a single sniff. Full-bodied and quite complex with sweet malt notes mingling perfectly with pickling spices, hop oils and citrus zest. A Saison on steroids and very drinkable

Abbey Ale
(Ommegang, Cooperstown, New York)

Abbey Dubbel Style. Meditate on this dark ruby elixir. Breathe in its deep emanations of fruit and spice. Is that clove you smell? Licorice? Fig? Sip serenely as revelations of honey, toffee, chocolate and dark dried fruit delight your senses Bright chestnut hue. Rich sweet malt and fruit nose. Moderately full-bodied with a lively carbonation. The malt has a substantial, dry, fruitiness. Hops are supportive and well-balanced. Very authentically Belgian in style with a wonderful fruity, malty expression.

Foret Organic Saison
(Brasserie Dupont, Belgium)

Saison Style. Gold with a frothy head. Strikingly complex, earthy aromas show a considerable hop influence. Big, rustic, dry malt palate has an mineral quality but also a slight fruitiness. Hops are supportive and provide complexity. This big beer is beautifully balanced and very distinctive.

Saison Style. Orange-amber hue with a lengthy, frothy head. The aroma is of apples, lemon, pepper, and malt with a funky earthy edge. A rich entry leads to a full-bodied palate with sweet marmalade, anise, and bready malt flavors, along with a precisely balanced melange of spices. Finishes with balanced citrus hops and nice earthiness. A superb cheese beer.

Brown Ale Style. Dark mahogany color with a tan head. Sweet toffeed malt and hazelnut aromas are deliciously inviting. A smooth rich entry leads to a medium-bodied caramelized malt palate with with sweet toffee and toasted hazelnut flavors. Rich and sweet without being cloying. A must try beer for everyone!

Doppelbock Style. Deep chestnut color. Sweet roasted malt aromas with earthy hops and a faint woody notes. A smooth rich entry leads to an sweetish, chewy full-bodied dark roasted malt palate with intense dried fruit, roasted nuts, mocha, and mild toffee flavors. Finishes with a very long, mild earthy hop and darkly toasted nut bread fade. An incredibly rich and delicious world-class doppelbock.

Stella Artois Premium Lager
(Stella Artois, Leuven, Belgium)

Pale Lager Style. Pale yellow-gold hue. Pours with a rich frothy white head. Fresh pale malt aromas have a sweet herbal note (from the hops). Follows through well with a clean, crisp medium-bodied palate that finishes with soft, lingering hoppy finish that is a signature of this brand. A highly drinkable and refreshing lager.

Full Sail Pilsner
(Full Sail brewing, Hood River, Oregon)

Pilsner Style . Deep orange-gold hue. Medium-bodied. Rich aromas of toasty malt with a trace of floral hop. Stunningly rich and flavorful malt on the palate has a bohemian, caramelized character and is lifted by full carbonation and modest bittering hops that assert on the finish. A great domestic Pilsner with a dry malty expression.

Sam Adams Black Lager
(Boston Beer Co, Boston, Massachussets)

Dark Lager Style. Deep dark brownish black color with a light tan head. Sweet dark caramel and roasted nut aromas follow through to a smooth frothy medium-to full-bodied palate with rich chew caramelized dark malt, honeyed pumpernickel toast, nuts, and candied citrus peel flavors. Finishes with a delicate, long sweet fade of toffee and a hint of licorice with faint dusty hop impression. Deliciously and amazingly easy drinking and light considering the richness of flavor.

Witbier Style. Pale hazy yellow hue. Pours with a generous frothy white head. Smooth and creamy with a generous yeasty character and subtle clove and brown spice notes that linger on the finish. This is still a fine example of the white beer genre.

Wheat Beer Style. Semi-cloudy with a bright golden color. A wonderfully complex nose of malt, citrus, and exotic spice with faint tropical notes. Very tropical on the palate with notes of banana and pineapple with sweet malt and citrus flavors.

Hefe Weizen Style. Cloudy, brightly colored golden brew with a thick, white head. A great play of citrus and yeast on the nose. Crisp and clean on the palate with generous malt flavors and perfect balance. A classic.

Smoked Porter
(Alaskan brewing, Juneau, Alaska)

Porter. Very strong smoked alder wood aroma. Dark black-brown color and a pillowy tan head with great Brussels lace. Sweet, smoky and complex flavors with excellent malt character. Creamy goodness, well-balanced. The perfect beer to pair with smoked salmon.

Fuller’s London Porter
(Full, Smith & Turner brewing, London, UK)

Porter. Dark brown with a thick, creamy head. Rich and tart with mild roasted malt notes complimenting dried fruit and earthy hop aromas. Medium bodied with a creamy texture and firm dark roasted malt flavors. Dry and beautifully balanced with a trailing classic British hop impression.

Obsidian Stout
(Deschutes brewery, Bend, Oregon)

Dry Stout. Opaque dark brown with a creamy taupe head. Dark chocolate notes, roasted malt, and dried fruit aromas. Rich and slightly creamy while dry and refreshing for the style. Roasted nutty malt and mild earthy hop fade. Medium to full bodied, complex and restrained with every component in good measure.

Old Rasputin Imperial Stout
(North Coast brewing, Fort Bragg, California)

Imperial Stout. Dark, deep brown, nearly opaque with a thick tan head. An amazing complex nose with fruity ale notes mingling with roasted malt, star anise, and grape must. Full-bodied with explosive flavors of dark roasted coffee, bitter chocolate, exotic brown spices, and mocha cream. Finishes very warm with trailing hints of cocoa nibs. Incredible!

Cassis Lambic
(Brouwerij Lindemans, Vlezenbeek, Belgium)

Lambic Style. Deep garnet in color with an intense black currant nose. Fruit intensity carries through, with enough acidity to balance. Well-made version of a less traditional, sweeter fruit Lambic.

Boon Framboise
(Brouverij Boon, Lembeek, Belgium)

Lambic Style. Brilliant amber appearance. Somewhat toasty, vinous aromas. Nice woody, tart raspberry note with rather elegant, seemingly mature Lambic quality on the moderately full body with very fine beaded carbonation. This has been aged to a mellow, fragrant stage and finishes with a delicate raspberry, woody, and dried hop character.

Clausthaler Classic Lager
(Radeberger Gryuppe, Frankfort on Main, Germany)

Non-acoholic Lager. Deep golden-yellow hue. Malty, cooked grain aromas with soapy hop accents. Follows through with a generous malty, slightly sweet palate that finishes with tangy hop flavors. Impressively flavorful for this category.
